Nigerian Youths Defy President's Appeal, Vow to Continue Hunger Protests

 

Despite the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu's appeal for calmness, Nigerian youths have insisted on pressing on with their 10-day planned protest against bad governance in the country. The protests, which began on the 1st of August 2024, have seen thousands of young people take to the streets to demand an end to the crippling economic policies that have led to soaring food prices and commodity costs. 

The protesters, who have been peaceful but resolute, say they will not be swayed by the President's call for calmness, insisting that the government must take concrete steps to address the country's economic woes. 

"We will not be silenced or intimidated," said Omoyele Sowore, a protest leader. "We will continue to demand good governance and accountability from our leaders. The President's appeal is too little, too late." 

The protests have gained widespread support across the country, with many Nigerians expressing frustration with the government's handling of the economy. The hashtag #EndBadGovernance has been trending on social media, with many calling for the government to take immediate action to address the country's challenges. 

The government has promised to dialogue with the protesters and address their concerns, but the youths say they will not back down until they see tangible results. 

"We want action, not words," said another protester. "We will continue to occupy the streets until our demands are met." 

The nationwide protests are expected to continue for the next 10 days, with many expecting the situation to escalate if the government fails to respond to the protesters' demands.
